Stand Up & Cheer is my creation, born of nearly two decades of living in the world of sports.
Frustrated athlete. Couldn't throw a curveball, catch one, hit one, or run. Chances to play professionally were zilch. I was crushed.
Especially since I grew up a Pete Rose fan in Portland, Ore. and wanted to play against him someday.
I took my first job in sports as a concession worker, just hoping to meet my idol when the Philadelphia Phillies came through Portland to play an
exhibition game.
I ended up selling sno-cones on a 40 degree night and Rose wouldn't sign my autograph. I noticed the beer guy selling a ton of beer
that night. Even if it was cold, he still made a lot of money. I watched with amazement and over the course of the game,
grew friendly with him, wanting to know his secret. His story? "American's love to buy... we hate to be sold, make it easy for them
to buy and success will come your way, " he said. "Everyone buys on emotion and then justifies rationally later, think about it kid."
But, I was only 15 and the liquor laws prohibited me from selling beer. So, we talked some more at the next game.
must have pestered him to no end. Finally, he told me to get some pretzels and follow him everywhere he went. He guaranteed
my sales would jump. So I took his advice and begged my manager to let me sell pretzels. I followed him everywhere for the next
several months. I followed the beer man with pretzels every game and guess what? My sales skyrocketed.
That was my first lesson into vertical integration.
That was then, this is now. After more years than I care to count successfully marketing and building franchises into
profitable ventures, I've created Stand Up & Cheer.
